Joyce Buxton, Dr.PH

A native of Columbia, South Carolina, Dr. Buxton earned a bachelor’s degree from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina. She earned master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of South Carolina. She was selected as an Outstanding Female Graduate of the University of South Carolina and awarded a full scholarship from the United Negro College Fund as a result of rigorous competition to complete her doctoral studies. Dr. Buxton was the first person to receive a Doctor of Public Health degree from the University of South Carolina. She received national recognition for her dissertation on drug use among the elderly. The results of her findings were printed in USA Today, The State, and The Atlanta Constitution.

For 20 years she was the Coordinator of Grant Writing/District Project Monitoring, and Strategic Planning for Richland County School District One where she assisted in grant development and coordinated district strategic planning activities. She was the district leader for Accreditation, School Improvement Plans, Accountability Plans, district-wide program planning, and program monitoring.

 

Dr. Buxton has taught on the collegiate level all her professional career and currently teaches virtually.

She was Director of Health and Human Services for the State of South Carolina for 3 years under former Governor Carroll Campbell.

Dr. Joyce Buxton is the president of the B Company, an organization that provides high quality researched-based assistance in the areas of community relations, public relations, strategic planning, and diversity training. The focus of the B Company is to provide services to clients that center on one primary premise – “balance through basics.” The common theme of all services rendered is that of ensuring client satisfaction. Tailor-made services for individual clients are based on years of research, experience, and basic common sense.


Dr. Buxton was WIS TV’s relationship expert and was featured every Monday at 5:00 p.m. on Live at Five for six years. She was a radio talk show host prior to joining WIS.


Dr. Buxton’s hobbies include cooking, especially baking, reading, and working in her yard.
